ROYAL OBSERVATORY EDINBURGH

The Library of the Royal Observatory Edinburgh consists of some 50,000 titles and is divided into two main sections: (1) the Main Library containing all material from 1900 onwards, and (2) the Crawford Library and Archives. The Library serves the staff of the Royal Observatory Edinburgh, the Institute of Astronomy of the University of Edinburgh, the wider astronomical community as a whole and researchers in the history of science. The Royal Observatory Edinburgh comes under the auspices of the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council (PPARC).

The Crawford Library is made up of some 15,000 items spanning the thirteenth to the nineteenth centuries. The collection was donated to the Royal Observatory Edinburgh in 1888 by the 26th Earl of Crawford and contains first editions of all major works on astronomy and related subjects.

The Archives comprise the notebooks, correspondence and other papers of the former Astronomical Institution from 1764, Astronomers Royal for Scotland, and the 26th Earl of Crawford. The collection also includes watercolours, diaries and photographic plates of Charles Piazzi Smyth, Astronomer Royal for Scotland 1846-1888 which were handed over to the observatory, on permanent loan, in 1988 by the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

The National Register of Archives for Scotland has surveyed the holdings of the Royal Observatory (survey number NRAS2657).
