Archival Summaries

ROYAL HIGHLAND AND AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY OF SCOTLAND

The Society was founded in 1784 to promote agricultural interests and education and also the study of the Gaelic language and Scottish music and poetry. The archives detail the functions and interests of the Society since its inception, particularly the running of its Shows and competitions. Amongst these, of particular interest are the records relating to the Island of St Kilda, the publication of a Gaelic dictionary and the early years of the project to compile agricultural statistics. There are essays on geological and mineralogical subjects as well as more obviously agricultural matters. Besides the manuscript collections, the Society has an extensive library and a large and important collection of pamphlets from an early period, many of them very rare. The Society's holdings have been surveyed by the National Register of Archives for Scotland (survey number NRAS2711).

The sederunt books of the Society have been microfilmed and a copy is available in the West Search Room of the National Archives of Scotland (reference RH4/188).
