WEST DUNBARTONSHIRE ARCHIVES
(DUMBARTON LIBRARY)

West Dunbartonshire Archives holds the official records of West Dunbartonshire Council, the former Dumbarton District Council and of the former Dumbarton Burgh Council. In addition, the Archive holds some records from the former Dunbarton County Council and the various parish councils and parochial boards.

A more detailed survey of the private records deposited at the library is held by the National Register of Archives for Scotland (NRAS). The NRAS survey (number NRAS547) was compiled in 1970 with later additions. Most, though not all, of the business, society and other private records mentioned below are included in the NRAS survey, along with information on other collections held by the library, including the 'Watchmeal Collection', 5 volumes of miscellaneous manuscript and printed material, with press cuttings, collected by David Murray for his history of Dunbartonshire, a list of plans, including John Speed's 'The Kingdome of Scotland', 1610 and a list of photographic negatives including a number from the Leven shipyard of John Denny.
